To date, accelerators have used niobium titanium conductors for their magnets, enabling a maximum magnetic field of about 10 Tesla. To go higher means using alternative superconducting materials, namely niobium tin (Nb3Sn).
The Short Model Coil (SMC) project started in 2007 within the context of the Next European Dipole Joint Research Activity. SMC is a CERN-CEA-STFC-LBNL collaborative program part of the FP7 European project EUCARD , aimed at designing, manufacturing and testing Nb3Sn racetrack subscale coils in a dipole configuration.
The technology developed is an essential step in the validation of procedures for the construction of more powerful superconducting magnets with high performance conductor for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and future accelerators.
Present FEAC stuff, while working for CERN at the time, were responsible for these services:
- Translation of APDL input files to CATIA & ANSYS Workbench files
- Parametric CAD modeling, drafting & parameters documentation
- APDL input files & macros
- Setup of parametric, coupled multiphysics FE analysis
- Design space exploration
- Optimization of structural parameter to achieve the required results
- Procedure & results documentation
- Knowledge transfer
